Florida Law Allowing Death Penalty for Child Rapists Goes Into Effect

Florida’s new law permitting the death penalty for pedophiles is now in effect.  

DeSantis signed HB 1297 in May, and the statute is now in force across Florida. 

The law states that “a person who commits a sexual battery upon, or in an attempt to commit sexual battery injures the sexual organs of, a person less than 12 years of age carries a great risk of death and danger to vulnerable members of this state.”

“In Florida, we stand for the protection of children,” DeSantis said. “Unfortunately, in our society, you have very heinous sex crimes that are committed against children under the age of 12 years old.”

“The perpetrators of these crimes are oftentimes serial offenders,” the governor added. “We really believe that part of a just society is to have appropriate punishment. And so, if you commit a crime that is really, really heinous, you should have the ultimate punishment.”
