Florida State Offices Get Extra July 4 Closures for America’s 250th

Florida state employees are getting a longer Independence Day weekend in 2026 as the state prepares to mark America’s 250th anniversary.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Friday that state offices will be closed on Thursday, July 2, 2026, and Monday, July 6, 2026, in celebration of Independence Day weekend and the nation’s semiquincentennial. Those days are in addition to the regular state holiday observance of Independence Day on Friday, July 3, since July 4 falls on a Saturday this year.

The result is a five-day holiday weekend for nearly 100,000 employees in Florida’s State Personnel System.

“America’s 250th anniversary is a historic milestone and an opportunity to reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and enduring principles that established the United States as the freest and most prosperous nation in the world,” DeSantis said in the announcement.

For Floridians, the practical impact is simple: state offices will be closed July 2, July 3 and July 6. Anyone needing in-person assistance from a state agency should plan ahead, especially for driver licensing, state employment matters, public records requests, state permitting, agency appointments or other time-sensitive services.

The closure does not automatically mean every local government office, county office, city office, school district, courthouse or private business will follow the same schedule. Floridians should check directly with their county, city, clerk of court, local school district, health department location or employer before assuming a matching closure.

The announcement is part of Florida’s broader America 250 effort, the state’s official commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Earlier this year, the state launched America 250 Florida, a statewide initiative tied to events, exhibits and public programs leading into the 2026 anniversary year.

The state has already used the America 250 celebration to spotlight historic figures and patriotic observances. In February, Florida recognized George Washington’s Birthday as a state holiday in 2026, with state offices closed in observance. The state has also promoted America 250 events and historical commemorations around Florida.

For state workers, the July announcement adds another long holiday weekend to the 2026 calendar. For the public, it is a reminder to take care of state business early before the July 4 holiday week.

The timing also matters for summer travel. The five-day state office closure falls during one of Florida’s busiest holiday periods, when families are already planning beach trips, theme park visits, fireworks events, road travel and boating weekends. State employees who receive the extra days off may have more time to travel or gather with family, while other Floridians may need to prepare for slower state agency response times around the holiday.

The broader message from the Governor’s Office is patriotic. Florida is using the 250th anniversary year to encourage residents to reflect on the country’s founding, America’s founding principles and the history of the nation.

The practical message for readers is more immediate: if you need something from the state government in early July, do it before the holiday weekend.

State offices are scheduled to be closed Thursday, July 2; Friday, July 3; and Monday, July 6.
