Team USA’s World Cup story has a Florida chapter.
As the U.S. Men’s National Team prepares for its next group-stage match against Australia on Friday at 3 p.m. Eastern, Florida soccer fans have more than a national rooting interest. One of the rising names on the American roster, defender Alex Freeman, has deep Florida roots that run from South Florida youth soccer to Orlando City and even to a breakout national-team moment in Tampa.
Freeman was born in Baltimore, but his family relocated to Plantation, Florida. He attended American Heritage School and came through the South Florida soccer pipeline before joining Orlando City’s academy in 2020 from Weston FC.[1]
That move to Orlando turned into one of the better Florida development stories in recent U.S. soccer. Freeman signed as an Orlando City homegrown player, rose through the club’s academy and MLS NEXT Pro system, and eventually broke through with the first team. Orlando City says Freeman became the first player in club history to move from the academy through MLS NEXT Pro and MLS before reaching the World Cup stage.[2]
His rise accelerated in 2025. Freeman had a breakout MLS season with Orlando City, was selected as an MLS All-Star and MLS Best XI player, and earned MLS Young Player of the Year honors before transferring to Villarreal in Spain’s La Liga in January 2026.[1]
Florida also played a role in Freeman’s national-team breakthrough. In November 2025, he scored twice for the United States against Uruguay at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa in a 5-1 friendly win. U.S. Soccer says he was named Man of the Match after that performance.[1]
Now Freeman is part of Team USA’s World Cup run on home soil. The United States opened Group D with a 4-1 win over Paraguay, giving the Americans three early points and first place in the group after the opening round of matches. Australia also won its opener, beating Türkiye 2-0, which makes Friday’s match a major early test for both countries.[3]
For Florida fans, the story is bigger than one player. Freeman’s path is an advertisement for the state’s soccer infrastructure. South Florida gave him his foundation. Orlando City gave him a professional pathway. Tampa gave him a national-team highlight. Now the World Cup gives Florida a chance to see one of its own play on the sport’s biggest stage.
The U.S. faces Australia on Friday, June 19, at 3 p.m. Eastern from Seattle Stadium. The match is scheduled to air on Fox, Telemundo and Peacock, according to U.S. Soccer.[4]
If the Americans win, they would move to six points and put themselves in excellent position to advance from Group D. If Freeman plays a role again, Florida’s fingerprints on Team USA’s World Cup story will only get stronger.
